Eric’s Journey
I was at a crossroads almost 20 years ago: overweight, smoking two packs a day, and searching for a change. My life pivoted the day I stumbled upon a Jiu-Jitsu academy in Berkeley, CA (SBG NorCal). I was hooked instantly.
Though the initial weeks tested my limits, the community around me — coaches, training partners — didn’t just tolerate my struggle; they championed my growth. They helped me turn my life around: from quitting smoking to adopting a fitness regimen, and finally, to earning my black belt on May 21, 2022, from Lily Pagle.
Today, my mission transcends personal gain. I aim to emulate the patience, kindness, and wisdom that my mentors offered me, extending it to my students to help them become happier, more confident individuals.

Doreen’s Path
As a kid in 70’s and 80’s Kuching with limited access to formal martial arts education, Doreen relied on her dad, a martial arts enthusiast, for her initial self-defense training. When she landed in San Francisco in her twenties, she seized the opportunity to diversify her skills in Western Boxing, Muay Thai, and Jiu-Jitsu.
With a black belt in Kyokushin Karate and 25 years of experience in combat sports and martial arts, Doreen is more than just an enthusiast — she’s a certified guide in the world of martial arts. Passionate about women’s self-defense and combat sports, she believes in collective strength: “We are stronger together when we learn from each other.”
Doreen isn’t just teaching martial arts; she’s instilling a philosophy: a healthy, active lifestyle is achievable for everyone, and the earlier we adopt this mindset, the better.

Kent’s Evolution
Kent, having competed in both Muay Thai and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, found that the rigorous training for competitions and the pivotal moment of stepping into the ring and onto the mat infused him with a profound sense of triumph.
“Throughout my training journey, I’ve navigated through the tumult of pain, fear, anxiety, guilt, tiredness, and stress. I’ve come to realize that these emotions are not hindrances but catalysts in forging the mindset of a champion. They are the refining fires that fortify my determination and resilience. I firmly believe that true greatness is born from embracing and transcending these challenges.”
“In my pursuit, I hold steadfast to the belief that hard work triumphs over innate talent. I maintain an unwavering humility, understanding the invaluable lessons that can be gleaned from anyone, irrespective of their background or status. My journey is not about winning but about evolving, constantly learning, and growing.”

Swee’s Training
Swee’s journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu began in 2017 in Melbourne, Australia. After returning to Kuching in 2018, he sought out gyms in Kuala Lumpur and Kuching to further develop his skills, learning from diverse teaching methods and building connections within the enthusiast community.
Between 2022 and 2023, Swee embarked on an extended visit to the Canary Islands. During his stay, he continued his BJJ training at a local gym, gaining insights into their training protocols, cultural nuances, methods of communication for technique dissemination, and a firsthand look at their vibrant competition scene.
In addition to his dedication to BJJ, Swee diversified his training regimen by incorporating Muay Thai and participating in weekend football matches. SBG Borneo is his home now, where he nurtures his passion for martial arts and actively contributes to the local community.
Summer Lim

- Taekwondo
- Competitive Netball Player
Summer’s Rise
Summer began her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu journey with SBG Borneo at the age of 12 in 2023. Her athletic background started early when she joined her school’s netball team in primary school, and she continues to train in Taekwondo. With a strong mindset for sports, competitive training, discipline, and goal setting, she has become an invaluable assistant to our kids’ BJJ coach. The younger students fondly call her “Miss Summer!”
Training alongside adults and helping with the kids’ classes, Summer sets an excellent example for younger students. Her dedication to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, combined with her diverse sports experience, makes her a strong role model. She balances training, assisting, and her own martial arts growth, showcasing leadership potential beyond her years.
As a key member of our Competition Team, Summer consistently pushes herself, fearlessly taking on challenges — including competing against older, bigger, and male opponents in her last two matches. Her strength, resilience, and confidence shine both on and off the mats. Beyond her athletic achievements, she maintains an impressive balance between rigorous training and academic excellence, proving that discipline and hard work lead to success in all areas of life.

My Path
At SBG, my family and I have found a home in martial arts, and this community has shaped our lives in ways we never expected.
With a background in strength training spanning two decades and a desire to support my performance on the mats, I have continued to develop and refine my approach to mobility and conditioning. This personal journey has helped me develop a coaching philosophy that focuses on building strong, mobile and capable bodies — especially for people who must balance the demands of martial arts, family life, and careers.
Today, as the Strength and Conditioning Coach and an SBG coach-in-training, I focus on helping others unlock their potential. My goal is to help our community move better, build resilience, and thrive both on and off the mats. Whether you’re here to sharpen your skills, improve your conditioning, or just become a stronger version of yourself, I’m here to support you every step of the way.
Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just a sport to me — it’s a path for growth. And no matter where you start, at SBG we’re all on this journey together.
